FAQ

MeDioStar - Epilation and more

· How does the MeDioStar work for hair removal?
The laser penetrates the upper layers of the skin and transfers energy to the hair, inhibiting its growth. The energy is in fact absorbed by the melanin pigments contained in the pilifer follicle, damaging it. In this way the heat produces necrosis of the follicle itself at a temperature of approximately 60° C.

· Why for hair removal do I first have to shave the area to be treated and then use the handpiece in contact?
It is important to shave the hair on the surface so that only the root of the follicle remains intact under the skin, as this is in fact the target of the laser beam. The patient must be advised not to wax the area beforehand, as this would remove the entire hair as well as the part to be treated. The light compression of the handpiece also allows for entering in depth in this way hitting a greater number of pilifer follicles.

· Is it really safe on dark skin types?
The MeDioStar laser is also safe on dark and slightly tanned skin thanks to the possibility of reaching pulse duration of 500 ms, without leaving any burns or other undesirable side effects.

· How many sessions should I propose to the patient?
The efficacy of the treatment will depend on several factors, like the color of the skin and hair, the depth and thickness of the hair in the skin.
The diameter of a hair generally varies between 0.03 and 1 mm: hairs on the arms are finer and paler in color than those in other areas, like the bikini area where they are usually thicker and darker.
Moreover, the procedure only works on hairs in the anagen phase, in other words, during the growth phase, and therefore not all the hairs are destroyed at the same time; this is why it is necessary to carry out more treatments at scheduled intervals for obtaining a significant, long-term reduction in the growth of the hairs.
The number of treatments necessary may range from 3 to 6, since the absorption by the melanin contained in the follicles will vary from session to session.

· How long should the interval be between one session and the next?
The interval between sessions is subjective as it depends on the regrowth of the hairs that will vary from person to person. Generally speaking, it is necessary to wait from 4 to 6 weeks until the hairs have grown again and are finer and sparser.

· Do conditions exist for which it is better not to use laser on a patient?
Certainly not everyone may be eligible for undergoing laser treatment. The physician must make a correct anamnesis of the patient and decide whether to proceed or not. We recommend following the anamnesis chart drawn up by Asclepion.

· How should I propose/ present laser to new patients?
You can show them the treatment video and the before and after photos of other patients who have already been treated with success, or simply tell them how it works: that it is a non-invasive treatment that produces a significant reduction in superfluous hairs.

· Which "permanent" results should I mention to the patient?
It is better not to speak about "permanent" epilation but rather, permanent removal of the growth of hairs. The remaining hairs that grow will be finer and sparser and the regrowth itself will be slower. After a treatment cycle consisting of 5 sessions (on average) it is recommended to carry out a maintenance session at least once a year.

· What advantages does laser have over other methods?
It is a more effective and less painful system compared to electrolysis or waxing. It is longer lasting over time and less invasive for the patient, especially compared to electrolysis, which uses needles for extirpating the hairs. Even the single session is much faster compared to a session of electrocoagulation when treating an area of the same dimensions. With respect to traditional waxing, laser hair removal offers the advantage of not causing additional injury to those who suffer from varicose veins or dilated capillaries.

· What indications should I give regarding post treatment?
The patient is able to resume daily activities but should take care not to expose the part treated to the sun and to apply a moisturizing cream, avoiding cosmetics containing perfumes for at least two months.

· How much should I ask for each session?
A laser hair removal session may cost the patient anything from 150 Euro upwards. It will obviously depend on the extent of the area to be treated. A cycle of 5 sessions should be recommended to the patient for obtaining the best results.

· What other kinds of treatment can I carry out?
The high power that this diode reaches also allows us to solve problems with varicose veins and blue colorations of the legs that are cancelled by the laser beam thanks to the absorption of hemoglobin possible with this wavelength.
It is also possible to carry out skin rejuvenation and acne treatments.
